  1. In story of Beloved the concept of masculinity was intertwined in the fabric of this tale. In one portion of the novel the men of a plantation called sweethome were treated as men, which was contridiction to the norm of that era. Another scene where this can be viewed is when Paul D comes to visit sethe and at first he is admiering her beautie then after love is made he coveys his diapprovale with her. I feel that in a male dominated society even showing love for a women is hard to do when you have to revert back to the ideals of society.

  2. Progress is what being Male is all about. Paul D has his life halted as a result of him being treated like a man! Sweet home before school teacher took over would be considered a paradise which was very taboo for this time period. I say it was taboo because it set the men at Sweet Home up to be broken down, and that is exactly what School Teacher did by taking away their humanity. This led to a series of events that would be metaphor for what happen during the middle passage, which was meant to break slaves down. This ends up happening striping Paul D of his all, and forcing him to close his heart off to the rest of the world calling it a “Tin tobacco box”.
Paul D metaphorically calls his heart as a “tin tobacco box.” After what he had gone through at Sweet Home, after Mr. Gardner dies and at the prison camp , he locks away his feelings in this “box,” which he says has “rusted” over by the time he makes it 124. Separating himself from his emotions is a necessary action in order for Paul D to keep himself from further damage. But this comes with a price, Paul D isolates himself and is pretty much trap in time not going forward. Truly convinced that nothing can “open” his heart, him encounter with Beloved must have help him face and accept his past as just that…the past!
